Welcome

Welcome to the Centre for Ecosystem Management web site.

Whether you are a staff member, collaborative researcher, current or prospective undergraduate or postgraduate student, centre visitor or just an interested member of the web community, you will find a diverse range of information relating to the Centre for Ecosystem Management on this site. Our strengths lie in our members and modern resources, which allows them to deliver industry-relevant and holistic research approaches to Ecosystem Management.

The Centre for Ecosystem Management is the research arm of the School of Natural Sciences at Edith Cowan University. The Centre was established in 1995 by the University to combine a broad range of environmental skills within a professional service, which provides theoretical, practical and appropriate solutions to environmental problems and issues. This is reflected in the Centre's mission and objectives. The Centre for Ecosystem Management differs from other Research Centre's in the University because of the wide diversity of research activities members are involved in.

Our staff members and postgraduate students are able to integrate teaching and research experience. This brings together strong research skills, experience, and performance of individual researchers, forming unique collaborative programs that emphasise an holistic approach to managing natural features of the environment. This approach creates a niche that is otherwise unfilled across all Western Australian academic institutions.

The Centre for Ecosystem Management is a centre of research excellence within the university and a leader of ecological research within Australia. Members of the Centre have research interests in freshwater ecosystems, ecological water requirements, conservation biology, ecophysiology, semi-arid environments, the ecology of forests and woodlands and the cultural ecology of wetlands and other landscapes. Research is applied to resolving problems of habitat degradation, minesite rehabilitation, pollution, forest management, threatened species and cultural perceptions of the environment. Centre members work closely with industry and government partners and have strong collaborative research programs with colleagues at other universities in Western Australia. Centre members also competitively apply for and obtain research grants.

The Centre encourages members to work with community groups, take a leading role in professional organisations, and communicate their research to the wider community through publications, conferences and seminars. See News & Events to find out what's currently happening at the Centre. The Centre also provides opportunities for Visiting Research Fellows, Postgraduate Study, Postdoctoral Research Fellows and collaborative research.
